Bus project

Revolutionizing Bus Operations

We rolled out the "Connected Bus" project across two transportation cooperatives, each managing around 250 buses. We developed an application to streamline passenger scheduling by providing real-time locations and timings of the buses. GPS devices transmit data to a cloud server every five seconds, where it is analyzed and cross-referenced with bus timetables and route information to oversee bus operations in real time. Additionally, this data is securely managed, and the app helps passengers navigate bus routes. Users can search for bus stops based on their destination and receive notifications about their bus’s arrival time. Although the service was positively received, the addition of more buses led to increased data costs. To address this, we implemented a very low base communication rate along with a metered rate for actual data usage, ensuring we only pay for what is utilized. We offer four data speed plans, and for our purposes—handling a small set of GPS coordinates sent frequently—the most economical plan was adequate. After deployment, our monthly data rates decreased to just 10% of previous costs. It’s also highly convenient to order additional SIMs and manage them via a web console. We can order new SIMs in increments as small as one, quickly set them up in smartphones, and easily activate or deactivate them as needed. This flexibility significantly reduces operational complexity and enhances cost efficiency. The streamlined process not only simplifies management but also contributes to overall savings. Additionally, real-time data monitoring helps in optimizing routes and schedules, further improving service efficiency.
